Admission to New Zealand courses and Student Visa formalities

Getting admission to your course of choice in New Zealand

  •  New Zealand post secondary education is provided through a no. of public funded and private colleges and few major universities. Courses in New Zealand are varied and you would find courses ranging from Sports and Exercise Management to your usual MBA. Private colleges also have high standards generally but it is always good to ask your student visa consultant or a friend about how long the college has been established, what is its reputation, placement etc.
  • For admission - the college would need to see your marksheets and degree/10th/12th certificate, translated in english if they're in a different language, apart from their enrolment form , including for short courses and diploma . Most colleges allow for scans of these to be scanned and sent rather than courier requirement. Apart from this your IELTS test results are required by college to judge whether you meet the required level of english proficiency for that course. SO be sure to take your IELTS academic in time for the intake you're targeting( Such as July., Sep,  Jan , Apr) and be ready with your results at least 1 month before the intake. IELTS minimum band of 5.5 is required for level 5 course and can for many colleges work for level 6 as well.
  • Once the college/university has assessed your credentials which in the case of university or for professional or PG courses such as MBA requires recommendation letters/ experience letters at times - you will be issued a letter of offer by the college. Your student visa consultant would come in very handy in this step because he/she would be aware of availability of seats, college procedures, timelines and can work hard to ensure you get admitted to the best fitting college in time with the offer letter generated in a timely manner. With us , you'd at times be eligible for application/registration fee waivers for certain courses.
  • New Zealand education system is based on levels - a typical 12th passout from here in India would be eligible as such for both level 5 or level 6 admission depending on his IELTS score. Bachelor degree can also be applied for. Some private colleges/institutions provide transfers to universities to 2nd year based on diploma courses done with them - hence NZ education system is quite flexible allowing person to judge when he /she wants to continue studying for higher education, when he/she wants to work etc.
  • Once your offer letter is received your admission procedure is as such complete however to block your seat you'd need to pay the course fees (but you can  do this after the visa) for the first year. Your consultant for student visa in New Zealand can assist in this.
  • You can also coordinate before this (ideally) or after this with your college to provide you with accommodation assistance (if required). Colleges are able to provide for homestay or shared/serviced apartment booking for students at reasonable prices and this is a good option at least for first 1-2 months till you're settled in properly and want to take shared accommodation with a group of friends or explore.
  • New Zealand study visa process is easy and student friendly. As part of the process you do not need to pay the college fee before the visa is approved in principle in light of the documents provided.

Basic Steps for New Zealand Student Visa

  1. Assuming that the above steps are complete the main thing which remains to be considered is how to show that you've sufficient funding with you to undertake studying abroad in New Zealand without hardship.  This is of course a standard requirement for any country and again something where your student visa consultant's advice is very important. Now obviously the funding requirement you'd have had considered earlier and definitely something to plan and prepare for months in advance. However for those who've not planned months in advance and do not have bank statements to show stable funds available in their account since months, New Zealand immigration offers very student friendly alternatives.

  2. Basically there are 3 ways to show funding for your studies in New Zealand. The first and the highly recommended one is FTS (Funds Transfer Scheme). Without going into the big details this scheme involves the student application showing that funds to the tune of NZ$10000 have been deposited in ANZ bank of New Zealand in an account in the name of student which is a special account where the student will be drip fed this funds over his term of his first year at New Zealand for his living expenses. Apart from this proof of payment of full fees for first year (either by adding that amount  to the one deposited) or directly paying to college and providing the receipt is required. For this first we will get the student account opened in the bank then the funds can be deposit as per required procedure or undertaking given by student that it will happen when Approval in Principle is given.

  3. The 2nd way to show funding is of course via education loan. Now education loan process can be a bit tricky in the sense that banks require documentation and are finicky about it so let us guide you for the same.

  4. The last way of course is to show funding for your student visa for New Zealand is through your own resources i.e. your own or a close blood relative in immediate family. This is advisable if you can prove the funds are from your own sources and they are not very fresh i.e. they have been in your account/ investment since some time.

  5. Once the funding requirement is complete and you have collected the documents such as Letter of offer of Admission , accommodation guarantee by institute (or otherwise), proof of funding, medical certificate ( if your course of study is more than 6 months), IELTS certificate and educational documents, you're ready to apply. (Almost)

  6. You should review the application with your visa consultant and make sure everything is in order explained in a cover letter containing SOP as well. The correct forms should be filled, supplementary evidence provided where necessary and the application filed paying the correct fee by demand draft.
